JINR, FEFU, and MEPhI will train specialists in field of nuclear medicine
News, 29 July 2022
Admission of students in the Far Eastern Federal University is underway for a new educational programme “Medical Physics”, which is implemented collectively with NRU MEPhI and JINR. This project is fulfilled through the development of bilateral cooperation in accordance with the Agreement on establishment of the JINR Information Centre on the basis of FEFU, which was signed in May this year.
Student practices and internships in the Laboratory of Information Technologies and the Laboratory of Radiation Biology JINR are planned to be provided within the programme. This will allow students to master the latest information technologies for solving applied tasks in biology and medicine, data analysis and visualisation. Students will gain experience working at the unique research complex of LRB, designed for radiobiological research on small laboratory animals.
“Implementation of cooperative programme will allow students to master interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of biology, medicine, physics, and information technologies. At the same time, we will be able to recruit talented students to solve JINR tasks as part of their graduation projects. Such practice of JINR’s cooperation with universities in Russia and the JINR Member States has a long-term successful history”, Vladimir Korenkov, the Director of MLIT JINR, commented on the launch of the programme.
Aleksandr Bugay, the LRB Director, noted that there is a huge shortage of specialists in the field of medical physics in the clinical centres of Russia. “The implementation of the cooperative educational programme will allow filling in this gap and training personnel capable of working with modern high-tech medical and research equipment using interdisciplinary approaches. Practice at JINR will allow students not only to master modern technologies, but also to participate in cutting-edge scientific research in the field of radiobiological fundamentals of radiation therapy and the study of the mechanisms of action of ionizing radiation on the brain,” he stressed.

The programme is aimed at training specialists in the fields of medical physics and nuclear medicine. Graduates will solve tasks in such areas as radiation diagnostics and therapy, radioisotopic diagnostics in medicine and telemedicine, work on high-tech laboratory and scientific equipment and develop IT in medicine.
The advantages of the educational programme for students will be not only the prospects for further specialised education, experience with cutting-edge high-tech equipment, and participation in international projects, but also research activities in leading scientific centres and practice in science-driven companies.
The programme provides training for two semesters at MEPhI. Apart from JINR, practices and internships will take place in leading healthcare organizations: N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Centre of Oncology, A. I. Burnasyan Federal Medical Biophysical Сentre, the National Medical Research Centre for Endocrinology, the National Medical Research Radiological Centre, enterprises of the State Corporation “Rosatom”, the FEFU Medical Centre, the Medical Association of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Primorsky Regional Oncological Dispensary and other medical institutions of Vladivostok, scientific and research departments of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS).
